Mopepe means wind in Lingala — a name for the way our pieces move. The silhouettes are fluid, made to suit every kind of woman and to make her feel like herself, only more so.
We dress a woman who wants to stand out without shouting: someone who values craftsmanship, heritage, and quality, and who would rather wear something no one else will than blend into the room. Whoever wears Mopepe is meant to feel that what she has on is entirely her own.
There is extraordinary craftsmanship on this continent, and Mopepe exists to show it. We work directly with women-led cooperatives across Africa, so the traditional skills behind our cloth are not only preserved but properly recognised and economically rewarded. Our garments come together in a certified workshop, where fair conditions matter as much as the finished piece.
We’re always chasing the detail that makes a garment exceptional — the kind you wouldn’t find on a high-street rail. Sometimes it’s hidden: a panel of handwoven Baoulé tucked into a pocket or a strap, a small secret between the woman wearing it and the people who made it.
Our materials run from handwoven cottons and block-printed silks to our most precious cloth yet: a wild Madagascar silk, hand-spun and hand-loomed by the few weavers able to achieve it. Every Mopepe garment carries the name of a woman who led — a queen, a strategist, a commander whose story deserves to be worn and remembered.
The Taitu Dress takes its name from Taytu Betul, Empress of Ethiopia, who commanded a force of artillery at the Battle of Adwa in 1896 and helped shape the strategy that defeated the Italian colonial army — one of the most decisive African victories over a European power.
The Diyha Twist Top is named for Dihya, the Berber warrior-queen of the Aurès, in present-day Algeria, who united the region’s tribes in resistance during the 7th century.

Our garments are made to outlast the season — quiet, deliberate, and singular. These are pieces to keep, to wear with meaning, and to pass on.
We’re Marie and Syssi — from Benin, and from Congo by way of Belgium. Twins from another mother, as we like to say. We saw that the fashion we wanted didn’t yet exist in Nairobi, and rather than wait for someone else to make it, we decided to build it ourselves.
Mopepe is the result: African luxury that honours the continent’s heritage and its ancient techniques, made by us, for women like us.
